What is the Teacher Code of Ethics?

Educators are real-life superheroes. They are there for us as children, helping to shape and guide us into the adults we become. And most are teachers simply because they can’t imagine doing anything else.

When becoming an educator, all those who are looking to work with adults or children must abide by a singular teacher code of ethics. That entails adhering to a set of basic principles that will lead to helpfulness, strength, and honest practices in their teaching. These principles embrace a commitment to the student and a commitment to the profession of teaching.

Setting An Example

Teachers are meant to set an example for us all, and according to the code of ethics, that example should be as shining as possible. Tenets include teachers always being honest and straightforward about their qualifications, helping kids to stay safe and to learn, and never intentionally putting a child in a dangerous or embarrassing situation.

Perhaps most importantly, the code of ethics forbids from excluding or behaving in a biased manner toward any child based on the child’s gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or other characteristics. A teacher should always be fair-minded and treat each student as an equal.

The teacher code of ethics is an important and lasting tradition for educators in the United States.
