Dan Wilson's @ Pantages Theater Dec 13

I had an excellent seat for Dan Wilson's (Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare) sold out show at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis last Saturday night. There was no opener as Dan was doing the first set solo (mostly) and the second set with band.

The solo set (from 3-day old memory) started off on his extremely weathered acoustic guitar with "Hand on My Heart" from his solo album Free Life. The clock then turned abruptly back as "Turtledove", a Trip song from nearly 20 years ago, was resurrected. "Across the Great Divide" finished up the first guitar portion.

Dan then shifted over to his large black grand piano for a couple more tunes including "California" and "One True Love" - a song he co-wrote with Carole King. The last two songs of the first set had some assistance from Brad Gordon (DW said Brad was from California) on piano.

The second set involved various combinations of the following band members: Dan Wilson (piano, guitar electric/acoustic), birthday boy John Munson (bass - string/electric), Eric Fawcett (drums), Steve Roehm (vibes), and Brad Gordon (piano, hand trumpet, clarinet).

I grabbed Dan's copy of the 2nd set's set-list after the show so I don't have to rely on my memory here thankfully! Dan really seemed to be enjoying jamming with the band.
  • "Breathless"
  • "Easy Silence"
  • "Against History" - this was a very slowed down interesting version. I really enjoy seeing songs morph styles and sounds.
  • "Willie the King" - I hadn't heard this one before. Dan said it was about something very sad and that he wouldn't elaborate. He seemed to prefer listeners keeping their own meaning to songs.
  • "Baby Doll" - little different take on this one as well. Brad did some nice clarinet parts.
  • "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" - a Dylan cover
  • "Secret Smile" - some nice solos on this one. Dan went into little samples of "Silent Night"
  • "She Can't Help Me Now"
  • "Free Life"
  • "All Kinds" - really nice crowd sing along (as usual). Dan correctly predicted the first round would be a Minnesota quiet "I don't want to sing too loud", the second would be a "that wasn't so bad so I'll sing a little louder", and the rest would be all out singing.
  • "Everything Green" - a new song
  • "Made to Last" - more crowd participation re-creating the little keyboard riff

It wasn't until just now that I realized "Closing Time" didn't make the show. I know that's one song everyone knows...and I'm sure there are some disappointed folks out there...but I'm glad he threw in the new song instead.

This was probably the best solo show I have seen Dan do. His voice was dead on the whole evening and he really seemed to get into it and have a blast. That rubbed off on the crowd.

I ran across a few nice picture of the show on cursedthing's flickr page. Be sure to check them out.

To Beginnings

I started by writing a hand full of blog entries on my myspace page a year ago. Since then I got hooked on Twitter and have been posting more and more. I tend to have to re-word my tweets to get them under the 140 character limit, but by then I feel I have lost some of the story/meaning. Not sure how this will go, but I'll give it a shot.
